‘can’t get enough’ of royal wedding bets
British bookmakers are taking bets on virtually every feature of the royal wedding, with many saying that British expats are among their most enthusiastic customers.
Bookmakers are offering an enormous range of odds on bets as varied as the colour of the Queen’s hat, the designer of Kate Middleton’s dress, and the honeymoon destination of the newly-married couple. Although the majority of bets have been taken out within the UK, several betting chains have said they have seen a surprisingly large number of bets taken out abroad, by punters they presume are British expats. Graham Sharp, media relations director at William Hill, said that it was difficult to tell exactly who was placing the bets, but that the names of the betters, as well as the fact many seem to be living in popular expat destinations such as Spain’s Costas, suggested they were British. “I understand that we’ve had bets from around 87 countries, which accounts for around half of the total countries we take bets in,” he said. According to William Hill, most bets abroad are being placed in Europe, particularly Spain and Germany, but Commonwealth countries such as New Zealand and Canada – where the subject is likely to be of interest not just to the many British expats living there, but also to the general population – are also showing a high level of interest.
